Tonight is the night for a legendary UFC 292 event to take place in the historic city of Boston. Aljamain Sterling is headlining this card by attempting to complete a fourth title defense as he welcomes ‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley into the octagon.
O’Malley is a fan-favorite and has turned into one of the biggest stars on the UFC roster, at a level that arguably hasn’t been reached before becoming a champion since Conor McGregor. The style, the flair, along with consistent, spectacular performances in the octagon against anybody the UFC puts in front of him, has given O’Malley this title shot.
Aljamain Sterling–UFC Bantamweight GOAT
At this point, there really is no denying Aljamain Sterling and what he has done in the sport. The fans like to give him hate since the first fight against Petr Yan when Sterling became champion because of an illegal knee. The post-fight antics did not sit well with the MMA community.
Insider the octagon, Sterling is clearly the best champion the UFC bantamweight division has ever seen. He is so big and strong for 135 lbs, and he uses that the best way possible by primarily being a wrestler. An expert back-taker, Sterling will look to do the same to O’Malley on Saturday night.
This matchup seems to really favor Sterling and his style–going against a long, skinny fighter with no background in wrestling sounds like an easy night at the office for a champion as great as Sterling. After this fight, he hinted at testing his luck in the featherweight division because the weight cuts are getting too difficult at bantamweight.
Sean O’Malley–A Little Bit of Suga is What the UFC Needs
O’Malley has taken the fans on a ride in the Suga Show since his viral KO win on Dana White’s Contender Series back in 2017. Everything from his and his coach’s podcast to the wacky comedic content he posts on social media has grown a following, unlike any other fighter.
The most important part of his rise to success is how he performs in the octagon. The UFC has been looking for the next superstar, and if O’Malley beats the odds and gets his hand raised tonight, he just might be that.
His speed, accuracy, timing, and fight IQ set him apart from most. True martial artists and educated fans of MMA will be able to notice the elite level of striking the skinny kid with colorful braids brings to the fight game. O’Malley has a tall task in getting past Sterling, but it’s tough to not feel like the stars are aligning for this kid.
Sterling vs. O’Malley Pick and Prediction
After a lot of going back and forth on this prediction, watching the film, and imagining different fight outcomes, this is more of a 50/50 fight than people think.
It’s a close fight, but the interesting part about it is that it can go heavily in one direction. If Sterling can start fast, this fight is going to be one-sided, with him on O’Malley’s back. But if O’Malley can stuff a takedown and hit Sterling clean early on, this might be a quick night at the office for The Suga Show.
The official fight prediction is that O’Malley gets the job done with a spectacular KO early on–either in round 1 or 2. With that being said, the smart bet is on Sterling since he has more paths to victory.
