Ian Simpson continues to be a poker player to watch when it comes to online events, but he just hasn’t been able to come away with the biggest prize. Simpson is a poker player from Great Britain, and he has built up a huge following over the last few months.
888Poker just recently hosted a $120,000 guaranteed event, and it looked as if Simpson was going to be in a position to get it done this time around. This was the opening event of the XL Winter Series, and there were nearly 1,200 players competing for the top prize.
For the second time in a few recent attempts, Simpson was able to get to the final table, and this time he looked to have an edge at one point. Instead it was a third place finish for Simpson, but he did accumulate a good number of XL Winter Series points with this finish.
Things just haven’t gone Simpson’s way when he gets to the final table, but some of that has to do with his lack of experience. There are many players that have been doing this for a large part of their lives, and that experience always seems to allow them to push through.
Simpson continued to play aggressively when there were just four players remaining, but that aggressiveness would also do him in. It wasn’t long before two of the final four players were eliminated, leading to head up action.
Optimusmov Gets it Done
Because this was an online event at 888Poker, the identities of some of the other finalists are not known. Screen names provide aliases for the players, and very few of those players actually want to be recognized for their wins.
When everything was said and done at this specific tournament it was a player by the screen name of Optimusmov that came away with the top prize. That actually ended up being a small upset as this player was not the leader when the final table was set.
While Simpson was the player that was getting the most attention at 888Poker, a player by the name of Bartu79 seemingly dominated the first part of the competition. The trio of Simpson, Optimusmov and Bartu79 were quick in getting rid of other competitors right away, and that set the stage for an epic showdown at the final table.
Plenty More Action
The XL Winter Series Event was just getting started with this main event as there was a full slate of tournaments set for Tuesday, January 16th as well. Many of the same players were expected to compete throughout the day, although the cash prizes were not going to be as large.
Racking up points is a big part of the action as well as it will unlock entries into other tournaments hosted by 888Poker in the future. The top three finishers in the main event are now sitting in good shape, and Simpson is going to get back into some events soon.
