The New Orleans Pelicans are on the road at the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. The Pelicans snapped their three game losing streak on Wednesday with a road win at Houston. The win pushed New Orleans to 27-21 on the season. That still is in a battle for 8th in the Western Conference.
For the Spurs, they have been off since Monday. San Antonio fell at home to Washington, and dropped their record to 10-37 on the season. The Spurs are 15th in the Western Conference, and have dropped 7 out of their last 10 games.
The New Orleans Pelicans are -7.5 over the Spurs in this game. The total is 237.5.
Struggles are Real for Spurs
Despite having the top pick in the draft, Victor Wembanyama, the Spurs have seen a big time struggle in 2024. The rookie has played in 42 of the 47 games this season, and leads the team with 20.6 points per game, and an additional 10.1 rebounds per game. The roster around him is not built to compete in the West.
The biggest issue is defensively, where the Spurs are allowing more than 121 points per game. The Spurs then on offense do not make enough shots. They are 46.2% from the field, and 34.5% from downtown. Both near the bottom of the league. In a recent loss to the Magic, Devin Cassell led them with 26 points, while Wembanyama added 21.
The Spurs welcome Cleveland to town on Saturday, before embarking on a long road trip. The road trip will take them to Miami, Orlando, Brooklyn, Toronto, Dallas, Sacramento, Los Angeles (Lakers), Utah and Minnesota. The next time they will play at home is February 29th against the Thunder.
Pelicans Using Williamson’s Big Season
Zion Williamson is enjoying a fairly healthy 2023-2024 season. The big man has played in 38 of the team’s 48 games this season. He leads the team with 22 points on the season. Brandon Ingram is next for the Pelicans, as he is adding just under 22 per game. C.J. McCollum is the deadeye shooter for New Orleans, with 19.5 per game.
The Pelicans are 13th in the league in offense, making just under 49% from the field. New Orleans is 9th in rebounding, with 44.6 per game. In a recent win over the Rockets, Jonas Valanciunas was a monster for the Pelicans, with 25 points and 14 rebounds.
New Orleans will host the Raptors on Monday, before going out on the road for four straight games. The Pelicans will play at the Clippers, Lakers, Trail Blazers and Grizzlies before returning home on Valentine’s Day.
Spurs Compete at Home
The New Orleans Pelicans should win this game on the road. If the Pelicans want to keep trying to make their way up the Western Conference standings, this is a game they need to have. The Spurs battled in this game. At home, look for a well played game, with the Spurs covering the spread. The Pelicans may win this game, but the San Antonio Spurs are going to cover. Take the Spurs +7.5 over the Pelicans on Friday.
