The 2024 World Series of Poker officially launched on Tuesday, May 28th, and there were some live tournaments scheduled to take place right away. All of that live action is taking place at the Horseshoe Casino Las Vegas and the Paris Las Vegas Casino.
Online tournaments have not yet started as a part of the WSOP series, but the first event will be held on June 1. When that first tournament is open to players, things are going to look much different to those from three states.
Players from Michigan, Nevada, and New Jersey are now all a part of a shared liquidity pool, and this has never happened before in the history of online poker. There was actually the potential for this much sooner, but WSOP.com decided to wait until this massive event to get it going.
There will now be more than 22 million people combined between the two states, and it’s going to lead to some massive events. Nevada and New Jersey players have been sharing liquidity for the last few years, but Michigan players were never included.
All of this was made possible by the Multi-State Internet Gaming Act, a bill that had to be approved in each state.
What is MSIGA?
The Multi-State Internet Gaming Act allows for online poker sites to offer tournaments that combine players from each state, and these three are not the only states included. Delaware and West Virginia have also signed up to be a part of this group, but WSOP.com is not currently available in those locations.
WSOP.com was offered in Delaware until last year, but gaming officials in that state decided to go a different direction. West Virginia has yet to see an online poker site launch, but WSOP.com is expected to apply to enter the state.
The one state that is not currently in the agreement is Pennsylvania, and that is a state with a massive online poker industry. There will still be WSOP online tournaments for those players, but the prize pool will be significantly less.
There are going to be 30 online bracelet events available to players in the three states, while that number will be less than 10 in Pennsylvania. With WSOP continuing to add new tournaments, it could lead to even more opportunities in the future.
Launching a New Platform
WSOP.com had to do some work in order to create these shared liquidity tournaments, and it created some major changes to the app. This new online poker platform was first launched on Tuesday, and there are events there so that players can begin to see what things will look like.
WSOP is encouraging players to download the new mobile app as there will be some gifts waiting for them. Players can also begin to play at up to four tables at a time, and it’s going to be easier to re-enter a tournament.
There was a dark period while these changes were being made, but it’s clearly a move that will have benefits moving forward.
