Florida resident, Jason Mercier, qualified online to play in PokerStars European Poker Tour San Remo Championship and took home the top prize. Jason played well the first day of the Championship and by the second day was unstoppable. It took Jason less than three hours to defeat Anthony Lelouche in heads-up play and take home the $1,340,867 in prize money.
Jason Mercier was up against several great players such as Lelouche, Marcus Bower, William Thorson and Dario Minieri. Lelouche took home almost $780,000 for his second place finish and Minieri took home $450,748 for his third place finish. Rounding out the final table was Eric Koskas in fourth, Gregory Genovese in fifth, William Thorson in sixth, Dag Palovic in seventh and Marcus Bower in eighth.
Jason commented that he wasn’t even planning on attending the event. He was going to sell his San Remo seat because a friend who was supposed to come too had backed out. Luckily for Jason, two of his online friends said they were going so he decided to attend. Jason says that his online friends are now good friends. This circumstance just goes to show what an online qualifier can do for an online player. Most sites have low buy-ins or freerolls for their qualifiers so they are definitely worth a shot. And I sure Jason would tell you it is well worth it!
