Henry Lu Takes Down WSOP Event #43

With a field of 2,770 and many top players included, Event #43 of the 2012 World Series of Poker would be difficult. The event had a buy-in of $1,500 and was a No Limit Hold’em tournament. The total prize pool was worth just over $3.7 million and first place would earn just over $650,000, as well as the gold bracelet, so everyone was vying for the top spot.

The final day of play would see twenty players returning to the poker table and after the first five players were eliminated, players started dropping at a rapid rate. Mark Ketteringham would exit in 14^th and would be followed closely by Michael Judge in 13^th.

Henry Lu would then eliminate Randy Lew and it was almost time for final table play. Lu had around 40,000 in chips earlier in the day but by the time he eliminated Lew, he was up to 1.4 million. However, this was not enough and he took out Jess Yaginuma to continue increasing his stack.

This would bring on the unofficial final table. Zach Clark would be out in tenth after taking on Lu and final table play would begin with Lu taking out the last three players. He had earned so many chips that went from having almost nothing left in the beginning of the day to being second in chips.

After Clark’s exit the eliminations would continue until only three players remained: Lu, Neil Channing and James Mackey. When three handed play began, Channing held about three quarters of the chips. He would take on Mackey, who would win and double up, and just one hand later, Channing would take him out, giving Mackey the third place finish.

This left Channing and Lu in heads up play.  Channing held almost a 5 to 1 chip lead when heads up play began. Lu was not ready to give up and he would double up soon and then take down a large pot to earn the chip lead. From here, Lu was ready to take down the win,

On the final hand, Channing opened up with 250,000 on the button and Lu would move all in. Channing called and showed A-J with Lu holding pocket fours. The crowd was on their feet as 2-3-Q fell on the flop. The turn was a King and the river was a 3 giving Lu the hand and his first gold bracelet!
