Event #53 of the 2012 World Series of Poker has finished up and with a field of 3,166; this would be the largest group to compete in a single event at this year’s series. The tournament had a buy-in of $1,500 and was a No-Limit Hold’em tournament. The event saw Neil Willerson outlast the field and earn the first place win after taking down Vladimir Mefodichev in heads up play.
The tournament would return for an unscheduled day 4 of play so the two poker players could finish up the tournament. Officials decided to enforce the hard stop rule after ten levels of play on day 3 and the two returned for the final day of play.
When day 4 began, Willerson held 8,920,000 in chips while Mefodichev held only 5,335,000. It would take almost two hours before Willerson would be named the tournament champion. By the time level 33 arrived, the blinds were at 100,000/200,000 and a 30,000 ante. This was when Willerson decided to make a move.
On the final hand, Willerson had the button. He completed and Mefodichev decided to check. The flop fell 4-3-8 and Mefodichev decided to check. Willerson wagered 300,000 and Mefodichev raised the stakes to 800,000. Willerson then went all in and Mefodichev called, not having Willerson covered.
Willerson held J-6 spade suited and Mefodichev held K-5 spade suited. Both players were focused on the flush draw and a 6 of clubs on the turn paired Willerson and he would gain the lead. A 10 of hearts on the river would not help Mefodichev and he would be eliminated in second place, giving Willerson the gold bracelet and the title win.
