Poker pro Phil Laak held the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous poker session in live format after playing 115 hours of poker back in June of 2010. Poker player Barry Denson has now broken that record after lasting 120 hours and 20 minutes of continuous poker play.
Denson attempted the record last weekend and managed to outlast Laak by just over five hours. The G Casino in Manchester hosted the event and Denson spoke with PokerNews after by stating: “I prepared for the heat by gradually shortening my sleep over the period of five weeks until I was running on less than three hours sleep a night and this did help tremendously.”
Denson went on to state that he expected to have side effects from the attempt since Laak stated that he had visual hallucinations after his attempt. Denson stated he experienced aural hallucinations and at one point he could hear small children laughing and playing around the slot machines.
The record has yet to be approved by the Guinness Book of World Records but the video footage of the event and paperwork has already been submitted for approval. Denson has tried to reach Laak about beating his record but he has yet to hear back from the poker pro.
The attempt made by Denson was created to raise money for the charity Help For Heroes. This charity works to help British soldiers who are wounded. The event was able to raise £850 and now the money has been sent to the foundation so they can use it at a later date.
The record was definitely hard to break as it is mentally and physically exhausting. It will be interesting to see if Denson will be able to hold on to his record for a long period of time or if another pro, even Laak, will try and break the new record.
