The live poker industry is alive and well in the country of Australia, at least if you look back at what happened at the WPT Prime Gold Coast Championship. Nearly 1,400 players visited The Star Gold Coast Casino to compete in this event, and more than $1.6 million in US dollars were handed out.
This was easily a record of the number of participants at a WPT Prime Gold Coast Championship, and it also set an all-time record for a three-day WPT Prime Event. This massive number of participants battled hard throughout the event, but it was Lorenz Schollhorn that ended up on top at the conclusion of the event.
Schollhorn sort of came out of nowhere to win this event, and he never took the overall chip lead until there were just five players remaining. He got into that position by taking out Michael Fraser, and then he was also responsible for sending others home.
By the time there was heads up action, Schollhorn had taken a 2:1 chip lead, and that was a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish for the rest of the event. Even though this tournament set a number of records for Australian live poker, the overall win actually wasn’t that massive for Schollhorn.
He ended up walking away with more than $400,000 AUD or that amounts to more than $257,000 US Dollars.
Others in the Mix
All of the action began with players being split up into three different flights, and that was the first step in this tournament. Some big Australian poker legends went home early in this event, and there were some great calls and exciting turns along the way.
Andres Vasquez finished in second place in this event as he won more than $171,000 US Dollars, but he was never a real threat to Schollhorn. Travis Endersby was another player who couldn’t solve Schollhorn, but he still took home $127,000 by finishing in third place.
There were only two other players that walked away with at least $100,000 AUD, and those two players were Michael Fraser and Chin Yaw Chan. This was a massive success in terms of Australian live poker, and it should lead to bigger events in this country.
Big Events Coming
The World Poker Tour Prime Tour is an event that never seems to rest and there are now tournaments that take place throughout the world. There is going to be a slight break in the action as the next series is set to begin on May 12.
The WPT Prime Tour will be held in Montreal from May 12-21, and there will also be an event in Vietnam at the end of the month. This really has turned into a worldwide event, and that gives players from all parts of the world a chance to win big.
