How to Get Started in Sports Betting
Despite looking complicated, and actually being complicated in terms of math and advanced strategies, sports betting doesn’t have to be difficult for you to get started in. Don’t let that discourage you. I’ll walk you through what you need to know below. Other sites like the SportsbookReview and Picks.org offer great tips to finding trustworthy sportsbooks and even FREE sports picks.
So, first things first. I recommend figuring out if sports betting in your area is legal or not. For US residents, sports betting online is not legal. However, no one that we’re aware of has gotten in trouble over it. So at the end of the day, it’s up to you to decide where the needle of your morals and risk compass lies.
I also recommend figuring out what sports you want to bet on. Online, you can bet on any sport, game, prop bet, etc that you can imagine. To begin with though, I recommend sticking with a sport you actually like watching and/or playing. That’ll make betting more fun to learn, and much easier for you to stick to when things don’t go so well.
Learn the Basics: Sports Betting 101 for Beginners
There is a lot to learn if you want to master sports betting. However, I don’t recommend you focus on mastering it. Just get the basics down so that you can start placing bets right away. You can pick up a couple of books, or read the sports betting articles that we’ve written up for beginners here at 4Flush. Either way, these are the topics I recommend you familiarize yourself with first:
- Types of bets you can make (beginner and advanced).
- Types of bets made on your sport.
- How to read bets/odds/lines and how they determine what you bet and how much you stand to win.
- What is vigorish (vig) and how it affects your bets.
- Basic money management tips.
- How the betting process works online.
Once you pick this stuff up, making your first wager will be relatively easy.
Next Step: Find a Book
Finding a sportsbook is a catch-22. On one hand, there are hundreds, even thousands of sportsbooks for you to choose from online. To say you have options would be an understatement.
On the other hand, I would say that 90% of them are not worth playing at. That might even be on the generous side. It very well could be 95-98% of them.
The trick is figuring out which is which. Researching books like Bovada or 5Dimes and other pertinent information is paramount in betting sports online for the first time.
If you’re doing it on your own, you have your work cut out for you. A lot of times people find out a sportsbook is bad (or rouge) from firsthand experience. And that’s no fun. It definitely leaves a sour taste in your mouth, and for some people who’ve been burned enough, it ruins the entire experience for them. They quit betting online because they figure it’s all a scam.
That’s sad. Sports betting should be fun.
Our goal here at 4Flush is to send you off in the right direction. Here are the things we look for in a sportsbook:
- Do they accept US bettors?
- Are they licensed/regulated? Whom from?
- How long have they been in business? How does their background (history) look?
- Do they have lots of deposit options? How many for US bettors? What are their fees like?
- Do other bettors like their site? Are there lots of complaints/compliments from other people?
- Does the sportsbook offer bonuses and promotions? How good are they compared to other books? Are their terms and conditions reasonable?
- Is there a large variety of games to bet on?
- Are there other games to play, such as casino or poker games? A well-rounded sportsbook with a lot of options beats a sportsbook with fewer options.
These are the things that we look for when checking out a sportsbook. We recommend you do, too.
However, your other option is to read our reviews. That eliminates most of the work for you. All you need to do is read each review and sign-up to whichever sportsbook sounds the most appealing. And, in our opinion, you should sign-up to more than just one so that you have more options when it comes to promotions, games and odds.
At the end of the day, finding a sportsbook should be all about having a good time. If it feels like work or you’re frustrated day in and day out, you’re doing it wrong or you’ve signed up to the wrong book. So use the information on this site, it should definitely help you out. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
