Rapid City, South Dakota police are searching for a robber who broke into the 777 Casino on Christmas Eve. Reports state that he stole an undisclosed sum of money from the gaming venue.
The incident took place on Saturday at 2:00 a.m. when the suspect entered the casino while pocketing his hands. He approached a casino worker and demanded cash.
The suspect fled later. He is almost 5-foot-10 and has light skin. He wore gloves, a black face mask, white tennis shoes, blue jeans, and a winter coat.
The Casino’s Previous Heist
777 Casino had another robbery in September 2022. One bandit entered its premises, withdrew a firearm, and commanded an employee to give him money. He fled a short while after receiving the loot.
KOTA, a local television station, reported that the suspect was last seen on Whitewood Street. The police stated that he wore a dark bandana, a gray hoodie, khaki pants, and red shoes. Besides, it is uncertain if the two robberies are related.
Police Justify Their July Shooting
Rapid City casinos have reported several robberies of late. Police officers shot dead an armed man in Chances Casino’s parking lot in July after he fired at them. The robber brandished a firearm and started shooting before the officers arrived at the casino.
He continued threatening people even after the cops arrived. Don Hedrick, Rapid City Police Chief, shared a video on Facebook showing that the robber fired a handgun at the officers and struck one of their patrol cars.
The police fired back and killed him on the spot. They believe that the man deliberately fired at them. The shooting was reviewed in October, and two local cops were justified in applying lethal force in the incident.
South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Attorney General Mark Vargo disclosed that Marvin Moran Jr, the suspect, fired a handgun at a patrol car in the parking lot, hence prompting two officers to return fire. An autopsy report revealed that ten bullets struck him.
The shooting’s official report indicated that the two cops faced clear danger as the suspect was a threat to the public’s safety. They believed that Moran was trying to cause death or serious injury hence responding with brutal force.
Vargo said in a statement that the two officers were in a dangerous situation. A witness later informed investigators that Moran had threatened them in the parking lot earlier. He drank vodka while brandishing his handgun and firing it toward the witness.
They believed that debris wounded them when it struck their face. Still, Moran continued threatening them.
Investigators discovered from the robber’s Facebook page that he was battling cancer and didn’t seek medical treatment. He mentioned killing people randomly when his death was close.
Moran was suicidal and was determined to die by a police officer’s bullet. His strong desire to kill made him start following people who he desired to watch dying. He added that he wouldn’t lose anything if his plan succeeded.
