A recent warrant application has revealed more details about a robbery that occurred on June 14 at Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk. It started with a man winning around $53,000 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel &Casino Tampa. The victim cashed out his winnings at the casino and left in a taxi, unaware that robbers were following him in an Alfa Romeo.
Following a 20-minute drive to Barrymore Hotel, the victim exited the cab with his money in a paper bag. One of the robbers followed the gambler inside, grabbing the paper bag and running towards the car parked outside. However, the winner was not ready to lose his hard-earned money as he ran after the robber, catching up with him and tackling him outside the hotel.
The other suspect in the Alfa Romeo drove closer to the hotel to save his colleague. The robbers managed to escape with at least $10,000.
Ongoing Investigation
While no arrests have been made, the investigations are ongoing. However, a report from Tampa Bay Times shows that police already know two of the three suspects involved in the robbery. The newspaper did not publish their identities.
Being one of the largest casinos in the U.S., Seminole Hard Rock Tampa is a robbers` target. The casino has 5,000 slot machines and 200 table games sitting on a 245,000-square feet gaming floor.
Prior Robberies
The summer robbery is not the first nor the last incident to hit the news. Just seven months ago, a winner at Horseshoe Casino Baltimore was shot dead in his house.
The 65-retired cook at cafeterias in the Baltimore public schools was followed to his room from the casino. Clarence Joseph Buckner struggled with the robber unsuccessfully.
In October 2021, Jekai Reid-John followed a man from Parx Casino in Pennsylvania to Plainsboro in New Jersey. According to a police report, Jekai wounded Sree Aravapalli while stealing around $10,000 won at Parx Casino. Sree died later from the gunshot wound.
Yet, these are the smallest casino robberies in history as there are many other mind-blowing thefts. For example, Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas lives to remember December 2010. The incident involved a man who noticed a million worth of chips at a Craps table and planned a heist.
The man pulled over with a Suzuki motorcycle at the casino completely unrecognized and stole $1.5 million worth of chips. Carleo later stole $19,000 at Suncoast casino.
He later spent it on gambling, women, and drugs at Bellagio Hotel. His spending raised alarm which led to his end. He was caught and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
In another incident, the Hopper family planned a heist at Stardust Casino in Las in 1991. The robbery was led by Royal Hopper, a security guard at the casino. He asked his son to disguise himself as an armed robber and go to the casino to steal money.
The son managed to steal $150,000. Royal reported the incident but was not caught as no one suspected his involvement.
Unfortunately, the Hopper family was not satisfied with the little money. The family planned another heist stealing over $1 million from a truck transporting the cash. Royal Hopper was captured and sentenced to 17 years in prison.
