Unite Here Local 54, a popular casino union in Atlantic City warns travelers to book non-gaming hotels as there might be labor disputes if casino contracts will expire. Its members petitioned for better wages in 2011.
Still, the casino union is holding crucial negotiations with the town’s nine leading gaming resorts. It represents 10,000 people who work at the resorts, and each of their labor contracts will expire on May 31, 2022.
The casino union launched a website advising potential summer guests to book other hotels despite the ongoing negotiations between it and the resorts’ representatives. It created an “Atlantic City Travel Alert” page on its website informing travelers that labor disagreements might disrupt their trips.
Unite Here Local 54 explained on the webpage that a labor dispute can occur if an employer has prolonged or settled their employee’s contract. The website has a link to locate other union Atlantic City accommodations like Sheraton Atlantic City Convention Center Hotel, Atlantic Palace Suites on the Boardwalk, and the Stockton Seaview Hotel & Golf Club.
Details About Labor Reports
Unite Here Local 54 presented new labor proposals to Caesars Entertainment and MGM Resorts officials as the two companies have a huge share in Atlantic City’s gaming market. They have the most gaming and employment operations. But, MGM Resorts runs one casino in the region.
Borgata has the largest workforce among Atlantic City (AC) casinos. The latest statistics from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) state that the Marina District Casino had 4,133 workers by March 31, 2022.
Caesars Entertainment runs three casinos; Harrah’s, Tropicana, and Caesars. They have a total of 7,000 employees. Hard Rock had 3,451 employees by the end of March, Resorts had 1,580 workers, Bally’s Corporation had 1,463 employees, Golden Nugget had 1,521 workers, and Ocean had 2,830 employees.
Bob McDevitt, Unite Here President, stated a few weeks ago that the casino union is advocating for its members’ pay rise. He said that its objective is to move all members into the middle class and help them access better amenities.
The union’s labor negotiations aren’t a coincidence. Instead, it has an advantage holding them with casino officials now than in other months as summer is fast approaching.
Most resorts hire new workers in May and June. So, they have to end the labor disagreements fast to increase their workforce and offer more services.
More About Unite Here Local 54 Website
The union’s actravelalert.org website lists non-gaming hotels with active union contracts. Travelers might need to consider them in case local gaming operators decline to extend old employee contracts or create new ones. Its home page has a big image of union members striking in 2016 outside the Trump Taj Mahal Casino.
The labor dispute forced the casino to close, but it later reopened after Hard Rock bought it. The website will add more pressure on resort officials to review their workers’ wages soon. Even so, the site might create a hostile atmosphere in the ongoing negotiations.
McDevitt stated that the casino union is not threatening anyone, but it wants its members to get better employment contracts. This comes a few weeks after the nine major casinos generated an unusually high in-person betting revenue since the Coronavirus pandemic began.
