Fake chips were discovered in the Borgata Winter Poker Open Event #1. The event was originally suspended on Friday with 27 players remaining out of a field of 4,814.
An announcement was made around 12:30PM ET Saturday that the event would be canceled. The remaining prize pool will be held pending an investigation. Players that cashed in 28th place have already been paid prize money.
There is no word on how Borgata will handle the payout due to the remaining 27 players. The casino is working with the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement to determine how the chips were introduced into the tournament.
No arrests have been made and there are no publicly disclosed suspects at this time.
Players in a thread at Two Plus Two report the counterfeit chips were the 5,000 denomination. According to players that entered the event, there were three different styles of chips used in the tournament. Older and newer versions of a familiar chip design were in play, as well as a third that appears to have been the counterfeit version.

This event had a $560 buy-in and a $2 million guaranteed prize pool. Over $1.4 million has yet to be awarded to players.
Other Winter Poker Open tournaments are running as scheduled. The Winter Poker Open is a World Poker Tour event.
Now it seems as if the fake chip pic I posted yesterday has been confirmed by a million extra chips in play. pic.twitter.com/KqXalhvoLU
