Navy Vice Adm. Tim Giardina is the second officer in command for the United States nuclear war-fighting forces and was recently suspended and is under investigation for alleged casino cheating. Giardina is a suspect in an Iowa Casino case which involves counterfeit gambling chips. Giardina has yet to be arrested or served charges but he was suspended from command on September 3rd.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is currently investigating the situation. The suspension took place on the 3rd and it took almost a month for the announcement to be made as it is very unusual for a high ranking official to face such charges. Giardina was based at the Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska and it was Air Force General Robert Kehler who suspended Giardina.
With the suspension, Giardina does not have the ability to perform regular duties that are related to nuclear weapons or other duties that would require security clearance. Kehler would like to see Giardina reassigned and has asked Chuck Hagel the Defense Secretary to make the reassignment. It was DCI agents at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs that found the chips that were counterfeit and reports do not state how the chips were found or how much money in chips were found. The reports only state the amount was significant.
We also do not know what stakes Giardina was playing with the counterfeit chips. Of course, everything is speculation but if you consider the fact that the after a thirty year career, Giardina is on suspension, the case must have substantial evidence to consider. Strategic Command of the US Military chose to withhold the suspension information from the public as Giardina is still under investigation. The investigation reportedly began back in June by the casino and the Navy was unaware until mid-July.
