A bill that would have closed Oregon poker clubs has died in the state legislature. Private card clubs offer cash games and tournaments. These clubs operate in a gray area under social gaming laws that were passed decades ago. These clubs make money by charging an admission to the club and not a rake, which is how most casino poker rooms make money.
It is believed that casinos in Washington State may have been involved in the push to ban card clubs across Oregon. This would have lowered the competition and forced some players to drive to casinos in the neighboring state.
Supporters of Oregon poker have proposed a more modern solution that would address the poker clubs as a potential revenue source and job creator. Others cited the freedom for players to enjoy their favorite game legally in a social environment. Opponents view poker as an unlicensed and unapproved form of gambling.
Card clubs are not the only form of gambling in Oregon. The state allows taverns to offer video poker through its video lottery. Reservation casinos and parimutuel wagering is also legal in Oregon.
