Taal volcano is currently one of the biggest threats for an area in the Philippines where it is located. Right now, it emits potentially toxic substances into the atmosphere, in addition to large clouds.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the volcano could erupt in days, if not hours.
Nevertheless, Metro Manila, a casino which is approximately 62 miles away from the volcano, continues to conduct business as usual. However, they are watching closely for any possible changes.
An Asian news outlet, GGRAsia, officially confirmed that the property in the Philippines called Resorts World Manila is still maintaining its status quo in its relation to the Taal volcano. Ever since the volcano started showing signs of increased activity, the casino has been wary of that, but working as usual.
The casino is currently operated by Travellers International Hotel Group. According to them, the operations will “continue as regular while monitoring updates from authorities.” Moreover, the statement issued by the officials also indicates that Resorts World Manila waived overnight fees for parking on Jan. 11 at Newport Mall.
All the hotels that are part of the property would accommodate walk-in guests whose flights were canceled due to volcanic activity. Finally, officials stated that the property would “provide shuttle service for employees who are in affected areas.”
What About Okada Manila?
Okada Manila is a legendary casino property in the Philippines, and it too is still running. However, it has launched certain safety procedures that would ensure minimum damage should the volcano erupt. According to its officials,
Okada Manila has implemented precautionary measures to “ensure the welfare of all team members and guests.” Moreover, the safety measures are there to prepare everyone for the possible eruption of Taal and the consequences it may leave for the environment.
Finally, Okada Manila’s representatives confirmed that everyone is monitoring the situation and is doing their best to “keep the integrated resort a safe space.”
The only resort that verified a closure is Casino Filipino Tagaytay. The problem with this property is that it is very close to the Taal volcano, and there’s no point continuing working, as guests are also not daring enough to venture to that area.
Tagaytay is operated by PAGCOR, which is an entity run by the state. There’s an explanation on its official website, stating that the Alert Level 4 means “imminent hazardous eruption” could have an adverse effect on Tagaytay city and all other areas nearby.
The site says that the “resumption of operations” of the casino in the area is “indefinite,” and its primary goal is the safety of employees and customers, which the casino sees as the most important.
The Taal volcano has been giving hints about a potential eruption for almost a year. It all started in March last year with a series of seismic activities. In fact, a total of 57 earthquakes caused by the volcano were recorded in one day in November alone.
The eruption surprised everyone on Jan. 12, and many believe that it could become a full-scale volcanic activity.
