According to recent reports by the PPA and PocketFives, the Las Vegas Sands Corporation is now paying for a new website titled stopinternetgambling.com. The site was just launched and states that online gambling should be stopped in the United States. The launch of this site comes just days after Sheldon Adelson, the CEO of the Las Vegas Sands, released an op/ed piece defecating on online gambling.
Rich Muny, the Vice President of Player Relations at Poker Players Alliance says the site is new and anyone who visits the site can see the message of the site coincides with Adelson’s opinion. The landing page of the site expresses doubt on online gambling and in bold letters at the bottom, the site states:
WE URGE STATE LAWMAKERS TO OPPOSE INTERNET GAMBLING AND WE URGE CONGRESS TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL NATIONWIDE.
This latest development is not going to bode well with poker players who are already ticked at Adelson. There have been movements to boycott the poker room at the Las Vegas Sands properties and players are up in arms at the CEO’s comments. Before, the main concern was Adelson, but with the launch of the new anti-online gambling site, it appears as though the company is in agreement.
If there was any question that the new site is paid for by the Sands, then it is now null and void as both PocketFives and Lance Bradley of Bluff have both confirmed that the Sands is funding the site. As for the PPA’s stance on the subject, John Pappas, the PPA Executive Director, seems to have put it best by stating:
“I think poker players who want the freedom to play online poker, and support the legislative efforts underway in states and at the federal level should really consider who within the gaming community is on their side.”
