Nevada continues to be one of the top tourist destinations in the United States, and visitors continue to flock to the casino properties. Even though online casinos and sports betting sites are becoming more popular, the action has never been stronger in Las Vegas.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board just put a bow on the 2023 casino numbers, and it was another record-setting year for the state. Gross gaming revenue moved all the way up to $15.52 billion, and that shatters the record that was set just last year.
The overall increase was just 4.6%, but it was also the third straight year in which gross gaming revenue has gone up. This also shows that the casino industry has rebounded from the COVID-19 pandemic that rocked the industry in a massive way.
Table games and sports betting are included in the overall gross revenue numbers, but those two categories accounted for just over $5 billion. Slot machines continue to be extremely popular in the state, and those games brought in more than $10.3 billion.
Slot revenue did not represent a massive increase, but that wasn’t the case when looking at table games and sports betting. Gross gaming revenue from those two categories was up over 8% from the previous year.
Other states continue to try and explore more iGaming legislation, but the current system in Las Vegas, Nevada is clearly working.
More Records Set
It was a year for record according to the report from the Nevada Gaming and Control Board, and those records were set all over the state. Clark County once again accounted for most of the gross gaming revenue as that total was up to $13.48 billion.
There are a handful of casinos in Mesquite, and those properties were able to win over $183 million. That might not seem like a large number, but it shows that properties all over the state are experiencing growth.
The one disappointing figure came from Reno as the gross gaming revenue in that part of the state actually dipped close to 1%. Table games were more popular in Reno than ever before, but that city just wasn’t able to get as much action on the slot machines.
Even though at some point the action is going to level off, it is likely that there will be even more records set in 2024.
A Strong Finish
There were two new casinos that opened during the month of December, and that allowed the state to have a strong finish to the year. December is usually a month in which the Las Vegas casinos slow down, but that wasn’t the case in 2023.
Gross gaming revenue for the month was over $1.4 billion, and that represented a massive growth from the final month in 2022. NFL Football action has also helped boost the numbers in Las Vegas as Allegiant Stadium is typically sold out.
With the Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas in February, casinos are expected to challenge for a new record, even though it is a shorter month.
