Just a short time after suspending the Ivey Poker site for upgrades said to come in 2015, Phil Ivey has now focused his attention on an old matter. The poker pro has decided to appeal the ruling made in London to try and receive the $12 million+ he feels is owed to him. Ivey had fought the casino for some time over the cash, which he won at the baccarat tables. However, a judge ruled that Ivey’s use of edge-sorting is considered cheating and sided with the casino, leaving Ivey with nothing.
When Ivey won the huge amount of cash back in 2012, Genting Crockfords did not want to pay up, feeling he cheated to win. The battle has been ongoing until the latest ruling when the judge agreed with the casino and now Ivey is out all the cash he thought he would be given. CardPlayer was able to receive information from Ivey’s legal team in the UK on the subject of the appeal and how Ivey is going to proceed.
The legal team announced on November 3rd that Ivey would be appealing the ruling made by Mr. Justice Mitting on October 8th in regards to the Crockfords case and the non-payment of £7.8 million in winnings from August of 2012. Matthew Dowd of Archerfield Partners LLP is representing Ivey in this case and stated that he can confirm Ivey filed papers with the Court of Appeal last week.
Dowd stated further that Ivey is seeking to appeal the decision by the Judge as he feels it is incorrect in the sense of fact and law to conclude the Edge-sorting was a form of cheating. In particularly considering the circumstances when the Judge made it clear that he considered Ivey to be a truthful witness. The Judge also had stated he believed Ivey genuinely believed that his actions at the casino were in no way cheating.
It will be interesting to see if Ivey is able to gain any ground with this appeal or if he will continue to be without his mega winnings from the London casino.
