Earlier this week, the spring valet town advisory board approved Station Casinos to build its newest casino. The board voted in favor of station casino to build a casino-resort on the 71-acre piece of land owned by the company on the west side of south Durango drive, south of IKEA.
Station plans to build a 20,000 square feet dining space, 452 hotel rooms, and a 99,000 square feet gaming floor. This new plan is a scaled-down plan from the previous, suggesting that Station would build 1000 hotel rooms.
Winning Over Residents
Station Casino did not have it easy winning over the residents of Durango. Usually, station casinos in southern Nevada are placed through the Las Vegas Valley, just away from the bustle of the Strip. But, they still offer incredible first-class services and amenities to area residents.
Durango is a highly residential area. The residents raised concerns about increased traffic once Station builds a casino in the area. Station eased the worried residents in a Tuesday’s meeting.
For example, the company wanted to build at least 1000 hotel rooms on their property in Durango. Through its real estate attorney, the company told about 50 people attending the Tuesday meeting that it would reduce the gaming floor space and build a little over 400 hotel rooms. Rebecca Miltenberger is the real estate attorney that is representing station casinos.
Even after Station changed its original plan, some locals are yet to support the company’s plan. These locals said that the new development would be a disadvantage to the area.
One of the entrances to the resort casino will be along Maule Avenue sitting near the red ridge family park. The park is sitting on 26 acres, and it features a water splash pad, picnic pavilions, swing sets, a disc golf course, league ballfields, a basketball court, and an open area for various activities.
According to locals, erecting a building near another area with high traffic is not ideal. One resident known as Debra Korak spoke to TV show 8 News shortly after the casino’s Tuesday meeting.
She said kids in the area were not careful crossing the street, claiming the traffic on Maule Street is worse and will worsen if a casino is built. Korak suggested the entrance to the casino be moved to another street; otherwise, the project should be closed.
Station has more than just building a gaming facility. It plans to bring many restaurants, a movie theater later. Having a casino in the area is crucial as the nearest casino is five miles away, making Durango an underserved regarding gambling.
Culinary Union Was Present at the Tuesday Meeting
Station casinos and the culinary union have been enemies for a long time. Station prefers to work union-free, something the union is not happy about. Still, some union members attended the public meeting at the Durango Station not to support the building of a casino but to resent the move.
Station released a statement recognizing the presence of the culinary union officials. The statement indicated that Station was not surprised to see the members claiming that the union is continually harassing the company for decades.
The statement also declared that the union should applaud the project for it would create thousands of jobs that locals would benefit from. The report also noted that the union was playing petty politics.
