Vegas has been closed for some time now due to the coronavirus. For the first time in history, all casinos closed their doors for visitors, and the area was brought to a standstill, as well as the entire casino industry in the US.
However, the executives of rival companies operating casinos in Vegas have allegedly had an informal meeting where they discussed possible reopening of the facilities. Naturally, the talks included what safety measures need to be taken if that idea really takes place, and one of them is that dealers will have to wear masks.
According to this plan, small businesses would be the first to open, so that the locals could get back to work. Moreover, the plan is to open facilities that will be located near casinos where both workers and tourists will have an opportunity to get tested for the coronavirus. This would ensure that the virus stays out of casinos.
Las Vegas would open only a third of the entire offer of rooms, according to this plan. Moreover, the entrances would be limited, and there would be non-invasive methods for checking guests’ temperatures.
However, the most important thing is that all the staff will have to wear protective gear. This mainly means that they would wear protective masks and gloves.
Similar to What Happened to Macau
Macau and Las Vegas might be the biggest competitors, but they are definitely a family, as both are the biggest gambling centers in the world. Macau was closed for 15 days when the COVID-19 disease started spreading in China.
However, they reopened after that, but tight restrictions were in place, and that’s exactly what Las Vegas is trying to do here.
In other words, Las Vegas officials had an opportunity to see how the other gambling capital handled the situation, and they did it pretty well.
Yet, despite reopening their doors, the casinos in Macau haven’t been performing well after the shutdown. Simply put, if we add the fact that people are scared to travel to the fact that they have to respect the restriction in Macau, we get the result of 79.7% year-on-year decline in March 2020.
Therefore, the bad news for Vegas is that, even if the casinos reopen, they would still struggle to attract tourists for some time in the future. Yet, in this case, something is much better than nothing.
Therefore, getting at least a bit of traffic under strict restrictions will make the cash influx to casinos. This amount will be small, but it will definitely be very significant for the workers who will be able to receive their wages and do their jobs.
The Governor of Nevada, Steve Sisolak, ordered a 30-day casino shutdown mid-March. This was later extended to April 30. Although casino operators are hoping that they would be able to reopen the properties, Sisolak recently stated that the state of Nevada wasn’t close to the possibility of ending the restrictions.
