The first World Series of Poker Europe was a huge success and main event winner Annette “Annette_15” Obrestad of Norway was instantly catapulted to the forefront of the poker world. Harrah’s Entertainment, Inc. and the WSOPE sponsor Betfair have now announced the dates of this year’s event.
The 2008 World Series of Poker Europe venue will be the same as last years, with the host being the London Clubs International and the events being held at St. James (Fifty), Leicester Square (The Casino at the Empire) and Marble Arch (Sportsman) locations. The dates will be September 19th to October 1st, 2008.
In a press release World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack said, “It was a clean sweep for the Europeans last year. There are many, many talented players in the European poker community and I think it caught some of the world’s best known poker players by surprise. It’s safe to say the pros haven’t forgotten about last year and the young guns should expect a tougher fight in 2008.â€Â
“Last year produced a fantastic tournament which exceeded all expectations. Online qualification for the 2008 event is already underway so we’re expecting an even better contest this time around,†added David Yu, CEO, Betfair.
In the 2007 WSOPE, Annette Obrestad won $2,013,102 which is the highest prize for a female poker player and though she is still too young to compete in the U.S. WSOP, she will be in Europe to defend her title.
The schedule for the 2008 WSOPE has not been released.
