The second hearing of the Internet Gambling Congressional is scheduled to take place on July 26th. The hearing will be attended by one third of the senators as well all representatives and will include a hearing held by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
The Committee will be hosting a hearing which is titled “Regulations of Tribal Gaming: From Brick and Mortar to the Internet.” The hearing will take place next Thursday at 2:15ET in the Senate Dirksen Building in room 628 and a will be broadcast via live webcast.
Rich Muny, the Vice President of Player Relations for the Poker Players Alliance released the news off the upcoming hearing on the PocketFives forums which read:
“Great news! On Thursday, July 26 at 2:15 pm, the Senate Indian Affairs Committee will hold an oversight hearing to ‘examine the regulation of tribal gaming, focusing on brick and mortar to the internet.’ We don’t yet have a list of witnesses. At this point, I don’t know if there will be a witness representing poker players.”
The Senate Indian Affairs Committee last held a meeting on internet gambling back in February and Patrick Skallagrim Fleming part of PPA Litigation was on the witness panel. Fleming discussed the complex workings of the state and federal gaming laws and then tried to get the Indian casino operators to understand that opening the door to online poker would not hurt land based casino revenues.
Fleming stated during the February hearing: “All the preliminary evidence strongly suggests that there is a healthy relationship between online poker and live poker. Poker is, at its core, a social game of person against person. Hence, poker players as a general rule enjoy both settings and use one to compliment the other. While there are some poker players who prefer live games and some who prefer online games, the majority play both with equal enthusiasm.”
