New Florida Bill is a Step Back for Online Poker

Florida Senate SealA new bill was recently passed in the Florida House which will most likely set back the game of online poker for residents who want to see the addition made in the state. The new bill is a sweepstakes option and could make it very difficult for the state of Florida to join the many other states that are working to allow online gambling options.

The new sweepstakes bill that passed the state house says that electronic devices are not allowed to accept any form of currency. Electronic devices are also not allowed to accept an account number or code which would give players access to credits, prizes or any other value item. There is one exception to the above rule and that is that the electronic devices for gaming are allowed in casinos that have been approved, as well as racetracks and tribal reserves.

A loophole existed in the state which allowed for internet cafes in the state of Florida to offer online gambling options. The sweepstakes bill was created to fill the hole, but it seems as though it may have done more damage than good. This bill now possibly stands in the way of online gambling games being allowed in the state.

These cafes would allow players to win prizes if they purchased time on the internet. Players would enjoy games similar to video poker or slot gaming and they would win prizes based on the result of the game. As the bill sits now, many are afraid that online poker will not be able to be legalized in the state of Florida. Certain language of the bill will most likely have to be revised to allow the passage of online poker and gambling options. The passage of the new bill has made it difficult for proponents of online poker and gambling to easily work toward legalization.
