Legalized online poker will soon be taking its first baby steps as Las Vegas-based company South Point Poker is poised to become the first regulated online poker room in the United States.
The announcement by South Point’s CEO Michael Gaughan comes as his company patiently waits for their hearing by the Nevada Control Board in August. From there, the Nevada Gaming Commission will more than likely grant South Point Poker’s intrastate online poker license and make legal online poker in the state of Nevada a reality.
According to EGR Magazine, South Point became the first casino to release a free play poker site last October, however, they experienced numerous amounts of problems marketing the site to a larger audience of players. On top of that, the software was complicated to both download and play on. It was clear to the company they needed to make some big changes before entertaining the idea of launching a real money poker website down the road.
Fast forward to today, South Point has made enormous strides in regards to testing their software and updating its payment processors that will allow it to accept real money players in the state of Nevada. Once that is completed all that will be required for them to go live is their online gaming license, which will hopefully be approved by the end of the summer.
South Point Poker is poised to get ahead of several other companies who have already been approved for their own licenses earlier in the year. With 30 companies already in line their CEO is banking that their software will be ready to go well before any of the competition is set up themselves.
