The City of Dreams Mediterranean is aimed to become the first integrated resort on Cyprus and, according to the local news outlet In-Cyprus, the official date for the grand opening is pushed back. The casino was originally expected to open its doors to visitors in summer 2021, but it seems that they will miss the mid-season crowd as the deadline is pushed back to late 2021. In other words, to the majority of the outside world, this deadline push seems not so scary since it is just a couple of months. However, Cyprus is a major tourist destination during the summer, and it means that they will miss the biggest portion of tourists by pushing back the deadline.

The reasons for that are numerous. Cyprus recently revamped the local market and part of it was to legalize casino gambling. The government of this Mediterranean island granted a license to a gambling and hospitality giant from Hong Kong called Melco back in 2017 after the bidding process was completed. Melco Resorts & Entertainment partnered up with a company from Cyprus called Cyprus Phassouri (Zakaki) in order to start building the integrated resort.
Melco received an authorization to build the main casino resort in the city of Limassol, but it is not the only place where residents and visitors of Cyprus will have an opportunity to play casino games. In fact, they will also build four satellite casinos (some of them are already complete) in Paphos, Ayia Napa, Larnaca, and Nicosia.
The construction of the integrated resort started last month when Melco joined forces with a construction company from Greece called GEK Terna and J&P Avax. The resort will definitely be complete by mid-2021, but, as stated in the in-cyprus.com article, it will not open the doors to the public until the very end of 2021.
Workforce Expansion
Despite the deadlines being pushed, Melco is still very active when it comes to building and operating the main casino and satellite casinos. They recently stated that they are looking to expand their workforce for the satellite casinos located in Nicosia and Ayia Napa. There is also a temporary casino facility launched in Limassol which started operating last June and it will remain active until the IR is completed.
The satellite casinos in Nicosia and Larnaca opened their doors in December, and Ayia Napa is expected to do the same in July this year. Melco announced that they are looking for a total of seven attendants for gaming machines in Ayia Napa. Furthermore, the need four gaming machine attendants and seven dealers for Nicosia and Limassol properties.
All applicants who are selected for trainee dealers will receive a three-month long training. Furthermore, gaming machine attendants will receive training as well, but theirs will last for two months. Newly-created jobs will have “great career opportunities for advancement” according to Victoria Michaelidou, VP Human Resources in Cyprus for Melco.
