The 2014 World Series of Poker kicked off yesterday and once the noon hour arrived, players were surprised by the latest series starting off with a bang, literally. Ty Stewart, the Executive Director of the WSOP, had planned a surprise and those in attendance could not believe their eyes when money began to rain down over the Rio gaming floor.
Stewart started the event with opening remarks including asking those in attendance if they were liked free money. As the crowd grew silent, the sound of cannons boomed in the casino and $10,000 rained down over the crowd. Players could not believe that $10,000 was falling from the sky and according to PokerListings, it took those in attendance a few seconds to begin scrambling for cash!
Stewart had reportedly planned the cash drop some time in advance and is planning more surprises during the 2014 WSOP. After making it rain, Stewart went to compete in his only event, the $500 Casino Employees event, which is still in progress. The first event had a buy-in of $500 and with 876 players registered by level 5; a total of $394,200 is available for those who cash out in the event. The winner of the event will end up with $82,835 and a WSOP bracelet, not to mention bragging rights.
Event #2 is also underway and Vanessa Selbst is currently leading the field. This event is a $25,000 Mixed Max No Limit Hold’em tournament and Selbst is the chip leader returning for day 2 of the 4 day event. Event #3 starts today, with a $1,000 Pot Limit Omaha tournament and is a new event for this year’s World Series of Poker.
