Event #14 of the 2012 World Series of Poker has finished up and the $1,500 No Limit Hold’em Shootout event saw 1,138 players competing. By the end of the final day, it was Brandon Schaefer who earned the win and the pride of owning his first WSOP bracelet.
On the final day of play, twelve players returned and they all had close to the same number of poker chips so it looked as though players would start out soft. However, after just thirty minutes Zachary Korick and Jarred Solomon were knocked out of the competition and game play would move to the Pavilion room at the feature table.
Once final table play began, Layne Flack would eliminated Dylan Horton in 10th place and then gain a nice chip lead. The official final nine would then begin and Flack would dominate for some time. However, he would be part of the reason that Schaefer was able to make it to heads up play.
The eliminations would continue and Flack would eventually go down in fourth place. This would leave Adam Kagin, Brandon Schaefer and Jonathan Cohan in three handed play. Kagin would be eliminated soon and this would leave Schaefer and Cohen in heads up play.
Schaefer held a nice lead but Cohen would not give up easily. He would continue to check raise on most hands and this would give Schaefer a tough position to be in. in the end, Schaefer was able to pick up on Cohen’s moves and this would put the final hand in play.
On the final hand, Cohen opened at 90,000 and Schaefer called. The flop read Q-9-6 and Schaefer check called the 105,000 bet of Cohen and a 2 came on the turn. Cohen then bet 230,000 and Schaefer then check raised all in. Cohen was standing by this point, hoping for the best. Cohen showed Q-J which gave him the top pair and Schaefer showed 7-8 for an open ended straight draw. The 5 of diamonds came on the river and this gave Schaefer his straight and his first WSOP bracelet of his career!
