Cafrino.com is a relatively new online poker site that is available in the state of California. Players have the ability to win cash prizes for playing the game of poker for free and authorities in the state are now investigating the site. Authorities are questioning if the site is legal to operate.
Kamala Harris, the state’s Attorney General, released a statement via a spokeswoman which stated that the statute relevant to online poker asserts that ‘playing for something of value is illegal’. Sean Stravropoulos and Jonathan Aiwazian, the owners of Cafrino, have a different point of view. The two owners state that the site does not break any laws because there is no subscription fee for players to play at the site and the cash prizes are paid for from advising revenues.
The site first launched on September 10th and earned around $300,000 in financing by Kayweb Angels LLC of New York. Advertising has been provided by LiveRail for the site and according to a recent YouTube advertisement, the site is ‘free to play, 100 percent legal and 100 percent US based’.
The site currently offers Spree Roll Tournaments, which are patent pending, heads up tournaments and single table tournaments. Players can win a penny to thousands of dollars. The games are structured based on the level of play and according to Aiwazian: “Players are instantly separated by their abilities, with players who show better skill pooled to play against each other for much higher cash prizes, and the fish left to battle it out with each other for much smaller cash prizes.”
So far, this is all we know about the investigation. In the coming weeks, more information should be released on the investigation and it will be interesting to see if the site will be able to continue to operate in the state or if it will be shut down.
