Just one day after a hearing was cancelled to discuss online gaming in the state of Pennsylvania, it has now been found that the Coalition to Stop Internet Gaming has targeted the state’s efforts for iGaming. A video was released by Sheldon Adelson’s anti-online gambling group stating children and seniors are at risk if the option is legalized.
The video can be viewed here and highlights John Payne, a Representative of Pennsylvania. The video says Payne is working to legalize predatory online gambling and that online gambling is enticing to children, even creating Disney style characters to get children to log online.
The misleading tactic is not uncommon for the Coalition to Stop Internet Gaming to try and stop online gaming from being legalized in even more states in the US. While lawmakers in Pennsylvania and other states such as California try to legalize online gaming, the CSIG is working to put negative information in the minds of voters, much of which is misleading.
In Pennsylvania, lawmakers are looking to online gambling to help with a huge budget deficit. Already, the budget impasse has been in place for months, causing emergency plans to be implemented by schools and other groups who are funded publicly.
Despite the video created by the CSIG and the hearing cancellation, Representative John Payne says online poker is still on the table. Payne is the author of HB 649 and says his bill could create online casino gaming or Senator Kim Ward’s proposal, SB 900 could be considered. Speaking with CardPlayer, Payne says that progress is still alive for online gaming in the state.
It will be interesting to see as the weeks progress if Pennsylvania will be able to move forward with any of the proposed legislation for online gaming, or at least come to an understand as to what will be done to help the growing state budget.
