At first, it was uncertain for Varnell whether he will participate in this World Series of Poker event at all. This is mainly due to the fact that he was unable to do anything in Colossus and got a bit disappointed after that tournament. However, he decided to try his luck and skills once again.
This time, the luck has turned its tides to favor Varnell and he managed to get to the last day with ease. Due to the nature of the game, Varnell was able to use shorter stacks gamble and held a great shape along the way.
The last day saw a lot of uncertainty as Varnell had to face some of the other great names in poker. The two main opponents of his were Jonathan Duhamel who was the former champion of the WSOP Main Event, and Maxime Heroux – also a Canadian, and a winner of WPT Montreal who entered the last day with the most chips.
When it comes to tactics, Varnell had a very simple one which proved effective. His main idea was to simply run over his opponents, which made “fortune favors the brave” sentence correct once again. Duhamel, on the other hand, did not have that luck and managed to lose half of the stack by trying unsuccessfully to double someone up.
Varnell stated that everyone had been folding as a way to get to the final nine. He said that he had opened 90 percent of the time which helped him accumulate more than a million chips. It was simple he just raised with no flop mostly.
Furthermore, Varnell added that the others had not been playing bad, but that he had taken the advantage of them not raising the hands that they should have. In other words, Varnell thought that if others decided to raise instead of folding, he would have had a lot more trouble.
Heroux represented the biggest obstacle for Varnell and Varnell stated that he was sure that some kind of the agreement between the two of them had been made in order to maintain the game flow. He stated that whenever one would raise the other would fold. However, this was not able the go forever since the two players had to confront each other when there were only four players left in the game.
Varnell is ecstatic and excited to have won the tournament and he is definitely a talent that is here to stay for a while.
