In September, a player at partypoker wrote on Reddit about a scandal involving the poker operator. He alleged that partypoker was cheating its players in its fast-forward variant, earning huge sums of money.
Justin Liu, who goes by “nostalgic goldfish” on Reddit, alleged that some regular players on partypoker got fewer hands in the cutoff positions, placing them at a disadvantage. Justin also said that the poker operator was aware of the issue but did not solve it because it benefited.
Partypoker Acknowledged the Bug
In April this year, Justin had raised an issue with partypoker where he was told the software had a bug. The poker operator promised to fix it but did not, leading to persistent problems several months later. Moreover, no players were compensated.
The first part of Justin’s exposé consisted of evidence showing partypoker was intentionally rigging the games. The second part consists of a follow-up post asking prominent poker players to highlight the issue.
Being on the top of the poker radar, Doug Polk decided to help. Doug is often discussing or investigating controversial topics in the poker world.
The Upswing Poker founder read Liu’s post and instantly reached out to Rob Yong. Rob is a partner with partypoker. Through him, partypoker fixed the bug.
Impressed with partypoker’s swift response, Doug praised the poker operator. Doug addressed the issue in his most recent podcast. But, Liu was not happy that Doug was praising the poker room.
He posted another lengthy post on Reddit disagreeing with how Doug was defending partypoker and how it dealt with the issue. Liu feels that partypoker addressed the issue in a criminal and repulsive manner. The site was aware of the problem and chose to ignore it at the expense of players who were not compensated.
The poker room did not apologize. Partypoker blamed players such as Liu for continuing to play despite knowing the games were unfair. According to Liu, partypoker’s actions should be criticized instead of being praised.
The poker room lacked transparency and neglected the situation. Liu insists that Doug should have looked at the issue objectively and fairly and gotten to the bottom of the problem instead of dealing with one side of the story.
Doug Defended Himself
Polk got the message from Liu. But, the poker pro did not understand what he did wrong. Polk believes he handled the situation the best he could.
Doug tweeted, expressing his disappointment on how he became the bad person in the situation. He explained that he did what he thought was best by contacting Yong and partypoker to eliminate the bug in their software.
Doug continued and said that he was for protecting players and not poker operators. He noted that he was happy with partypoker solving the issue immediately he brought it to their attention.
Partypoker is yet to respond to the issue regarding unfair gaming or the backlash Doug is getting. But, it did release a Discord server announcement telling players that it had optimized the seating logic of the Fast Forward games to improve players’ experience. Partypoker also maintained that it would remain committed to upholding the integrity of its products.
