The long-awaited World Series of Poker Europe (WSOPE) finally got underway last weekend with the first of four events, a £1,500 NL Hold’em event with no Re-Buys or Add-Ons. 410 entries drove the prize pool to an impressive £615,000.
Scheduled as a 4-day event, the WSOPE opener that began Friday, September 19th, will wrap up today with 3 participants currently remaining at the final table – Jesper Hougaard, Fuad Serhan and Yevgeniy Timoshenko.
It’s anyone’s game right now as the three battle it out for 1st place and the prestigious WSOPE Bracelet. Chip stacks are flying around the table right now as Timoshenko just lost a massive pot, and subsequent chip lead, to Hougaard, moving Timoshenko into last position. As it stands now, Hougaard holds a substantial chip lead at 1.5 million.
Jesper Hougaard is a young Danish poker pro with one WSOP Bracelet already in his grasp, having earned $610,304 for a 1st place finish at the 2008 WSOP NL Hold’em Event #36.
American Yevgeniy Timeshenko has seen his own exceptional success of late, having won the 2008 APT just last month for a cool $500,000, followed by a 2nd place win worth $133,390 at the EPT Barcelona Open on September 13.
This would be an ultimately sweet victory for Faud Sehran of the United Kingdom should he pull it out today, having seen his last live tournament cash in September of 2006.
Monday, September 22, will also see the hosting of WSOPE Event #2, £2,500 H.O.R.S.E., scheduled as a 3-day event. Wednesday, September 24, the WSOPE will host its 3rd event of £5,000 Pot Limit Omaha, also scheduled for 3 days.
Then finally, on Saturday, September 27, the WSOPE Main Event will begin. Featuring a £10,000 buy-in and 6 days of NL Texas Hold’em, this year’s WSOPE Main Event is sure to be as phenomenal as last year’s inaugural tournament, where budding poker pro Annette Obrestad emerged victorious, having turned 19 just two weeks prior.
