It is not just Texas Holdem poker, it is Extreme Poker. The fourth tournament was held today on Australia of a platform 90m over Sydney Harbour’s North Head. In Extreme Poker the game is the same as you see anywhere, it is the location that makes this tournament series different than any other. Winning is of utmost importance in this tournament because the only way off the table after being knocked out is the affectionately called “express elevator.” That is a rope with a harness that leads straight down.
This was about normal for this not so normal poker tournament, one was 30,000 feet over Las Vegas, lose there and you got the chance to don a parachute and jump out of a plane. Another was held in the Arctic climate of Finland with temperatures, including the wind chill near -30. Lose there and you could get back in the game, as long as you removed your jacket and played in a t-shirt and before playing in the dizzying heights of Australia, the played underwater.
The latest Extreme Poker event featured 24 year old Hugo Asenjo, who outlasted them all. Hugo admitted to having a lot of fun but also added, after he to had to exit like everyone else, “Scary as hell though.”
The founder of Extreme Poker, which is sponsored by Interpoker, Peter Marcus was pleased when hyped, saying, “This is by far the hardest, most extreme event and the most scary event we’ve ever put on.” He was also quick to add, “We’re definitely coming back next year. We just need to find the next challenge.”
The winner of this event and the previous ones get a chance to go to St Kitts in the Caribbean in December for the Extreme Poker Final in which they will play underwater. They will also get an invitation to play in a more conventional poker tournament while there.
