We reported just a few days ago that two of the robbery suspects of the EPT Berlin robbery were in custody and police were looking for the other two men involved. Today, Berlin police have confirmed that the other two subjects have been arrested and are in custody at this time.
On Saturday Mustafa Ucarkus age twenty was taken into custody after he arrived on a flight from Istanbul. Just eight hours later the final suspect, Jihad Chetwie age nineteen was arrested after he returned from Beirut. Both suspects had spoken to their lawyers and the lawyers had reported to police that the two men would be returning to Germany.
More news has also been reported on the actual crime itself. The Berliner Morgenpost posted a report on Sunday which stated that the heist may not have been planned by the four men alone. The article stated that an Arab crime family that is known to police may have been the driving force behind the theft. It is alleged that two members of the family stayed at the Grand Hyatt right before the robbery and they were apparently recorded on surveillance video. It was supposedly a rival crime organization which told police tips on the robberies identities.
Authorities have worked hard to find and bring the four men into custody. It has been a swift investigation and a spokesman for the German Police was quoted in a German newspaper stating that the arrests were a ‘great success for the prosecution and investigators.â€Â
The money stolen from the European Poker Tour Berlin event is still missing. The first suspect who turned himself in stated that the four men split the €242,000 and that his was with a third party to be turned in at a later date. However not one dime of the money has been turned in to police.
