When Governor Chris Christie approved online gambling legislation within the state of New Jersey in 2013, it was a requirement that the state provided four annual reports. The first of such reports was released last week and focused on the current industry and problem gambling. According to Calvinayre, the report was submitted by Lia Nower of Rutgers Center for Gambling Studies and covers the first year of New Jersey online gaming.
In the report, Nower states that gaming regulations within the state of New Jersey are the most clear when compared to Nevada and Delaware in regards to aiding consumers in gaming behavior and responsible participation. The term responsible gambling is covered extensively in the report, known as RG, and overall, New Jersey provides quality solutions for responsible gaming and behaviors.
Nower found that only a small amount of gamblers took advantage of the RG features provided within the state. According to the information uncovered, it was not clear as to the varying players from multiple skins who may have chosen the RG features, so the number of participants may actually be lower.
The most popular of responsible gambling safeguards available seemed to be the setting of deposit limits almost 7,000 players, a percentage of just over 1, used this option to play responsibly. The second most popular feature used was the three day cooling off setting, with just over 5,400 players choosing to schedule a break in game play. The least used features included one year and five year exclusions with only 441 and 314 players taking part respectively.
In the report, information was also gathered to determine the age and gender of those using the RG features. The overall average age for online gamblers in the male category was 37 while the female average was 47. Women tend to visit the casino only sites while the male population traffic the casino and poker gaming skins, when comparing RG features used.
Nower discussed in the report that the reason why RG features were underutilized could be that the aspects are difficult to access as well as understand. In most skins located in New Jersey, the features rea located in the account tab and may or may not be visible to gamers from the home page area. Nower also pointed out the type face used was quite small and the explanation of each feature was very limited.
Nower suggested in the report that responsible gambling features have an educational component added for players during the initial sign up phase, allowing players to opt in or out to various features. Default limits could also be put in place in which the user would have to make changes before having access to different features.
