French internet gamblers received a major ruling in their favor from the French High Court (le Cour de) which made a ruling disallowing the Parimutuel Urban from preventing Malta based ZeTurf’s offering of French Horse Racing bets online.
The case was brought to the courts originally in 2005. On July 8th of that year, the Paris Court of First Instance ruled it against the law for ZeTurf to accept these wagers from French citizens online. This being against the violation of a monopoly granted to PMU by the government in France.
Last year, on the 6th of January, ZeTurf lost their court appeal, however the founders of ZeTurf left the country entering a more gambling friendly turf, Malta. PMU continued to pursue ZeTurf in Maltese courts, however the case was thrown out due to jurisdiction, bringing the case back to the original French courts. The new ruling, from the highest court in France is perhaps a wake up call for those in opposition of EU internet gambling.
