Global Poker Index makes lists on a weekly basis and takes into account the best tournament players who all became a part of a unique formula that calculates their success. The formula takes into account results over six half-year periods and calculates the GPI (Global Poker Index) score.
On January 2, they updated their list and created a new Global Poker Index Player of the Year list with Alex Foxen taking up the first place. During the most of 2018, Stephen Chidwick was the first name we were able to see on the leaderboard, but the start of November brought a change because of some amazing results made by Alex Foxen. At the end of the year, the results were much more clear and Foxen managed to retain the first position.

Foxen had a magnificent year behind him and managed to earn $6.6 million in live tournaments in 2018. In other words, he managed to boost the total earnings amount to $8.8 million. He managed to record 24 Hendon Mob cashes in 2018 and played 18 final tables. Furthermore, Foxen took five titles, and the largest title was when he won Asia Pacific Poker Tour Super High Roller in Macau back in March and managed to win HK$ 7,560,000 which is approximately $963,000.
Although the figure above was his largest victory cash, that certainly wasn’t his largest overall cash in 2018. Namely, a couple of weeks before that, Foxen ended up a runner-up in a $300,000 Super High Roller Bowl V where he lost to Isaac Haxton but managed to earn $2.6 million.
Foxen worked hard to earn the title, as he was on the 12th place back in 2017. Speaking of 2017, a total of nine players retained their place in the top 20 on the list, and the 2017 winner Adrian Mateos is now in 8th place. Stephen Chidwick finished second in 2018 and third in 2017, which is why he is one of the serious pretenders to take the Global Poker Index Player of the Year award in 2019. Other players who managed to be in the top 20 list both in 2017 and 2018 are Joe McKeehen, Ryan Riess, Jason Koon, David Peters, Rainer Kempe, and Nick Petrangelo.
Apart from the most prestigious award, GPI also made several other victors in different categories. Kristen Bicknell won the 2018 GPI Female Player of the Year, Alex Foxen also took the 2018 GPI Player of the Year Americas, Stephen Chidwick won the 2018 GPI European Player of the Year, Michael Soyza won the 2018 GPI Player of the Year Asia, and Joao Simao won the 2018 GPI Player of the Year Latam.
Finally, the top five players on the GPI top 10 list are Alex Foxen, David Peters, Stephen Chidwick, Steve O’Dwyer, and Jake Schindler. These are pretty much the same players who appeared on the list a month ago.
