The wait is finally over, as Global Poker Index (GPI) has released the first Player of the Year (POY) ranking. There are several reasons why the GPI took almost ten weeks before releasing its official ranking.
For starters, GPI randomly adjusts its formulas to calculate how many points a player earns to their finish. Usually, Global Poker Index looks at the size of the tournament/number of participants, the buy-in, and the prize pool to determine whether the event qualifies to earn player points toward the GPI POY. Earlier, GPI modified its math to ensure that high-roller events did not have an advantage over other tournaments.
Another reason GPI took a long time to release its official ranking is the poker event schedule. Players on the GPI standing must have 13 events to get their POY points for the year. Unfortunately, there were not enough scheduled events until several weeks ago to allow players to accumulate the number of finishes required to fill their cards for the race.
Fortunately, the GPI official ranking is usually out by the beginning of March. This brings us to today, as the Global Poker Index has released the 2023 POY ranking.
Who Is Sitting at the Top?
Jeremy Ausmus is currently sitting at the top of the GPI POY leaderboard. He is a familiar face because this is not the first time the poker pro has appeared on the table. Jeremy played in the 2022 PokerGO Cup, which helped him accumulate many points, becoming a top player on the GPI POY table.
He won one event and seized the overall title. He could not hold on to the top position but remained in the Top Ten for the rest of 2022. Stephen Song was the 2022 GPI POY.
As GPI releases the 2023 ranking, Jeremy seems to be taking another shot at the title. The poker pro has already played and won several 2023 PokerGO Cup events in Las Vegas. He has also traveled to the Bahamas to play the 2023 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.
In fact, Jeremy has cashed out over five events. One of the highlights was the win at the Deep Stack event. Jeremy also finished third at the Pot Limit Omaha High Roller and gave a shot at the PokerStars Players` Championship.
Ideally, Jeremy has already played at ten events this year. He has accumulated over 2039 points, becoming the current leader in the GPI POY.
Jeremy still has three more events to play per the Global Poker Index rules. Yet, some players on the table have accumulated good points from playing fewer games than Jeremy.
New and Familiar Names on the GPI POY Table
Other players completing the top ten list include Tony Lin with 2027 points, Justin Saliba with 1780, Alex Foxen with 1574, and Anthony Hu with 1517 to complete the top five. The remaining include Bin Weng, Michael Rositto, Dylans Linde, Adrian Mateos, and Preston McEwen.
None of these players have completed the required number of qualifying tournaments. For instance, Tony Lin has played in ten qualifying events, cashing in on all of them, including at the Borgata, Hollywood, FL, Lucky Hearts Poker Open, the Bahamas PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, and Paris (European Poker Tour). The battle for the POY title has just begun; you can expect new names on the ranking.
