This past Tuesday, the Republican National Convention took place in Tampa, Florida. During the event, the GOP approved an official platform that is going to help online poker players. The platform contains a plank which is calling for an online poker ban. The official document is fifty four pages long and states their opposition against online gambling.
The platform states: “Millions of Americans suffer from problem or pathological gambling that can destroy families. We support the prohibition of gambling over the internet and call for reversal of the Justice Department’s decision distorting the formerly accepted meaning of the Wire Act that could open the door to Internet betting.”
Just a few months ago, the Department of Justice announced that their position on the Wire Act of 1961 had changes. They found that the Wire Act applied only to sports betting. The poker community felt as though this was a giant victory but it could all be for nothing if the GOP takes the white house from the democrats in the November elections.
Rich Muny, the Vice President of Player Relations for the Poker Player’s Alliance, stated: “As we all know, the DOJ decision that the plank calls for reversing is the very one that determined that the scope of the Wire Act does not include poker. also, as we all know, our opponents are including poker in ‘gambling’ activities they seek to ban. Some have even taken to calling the activity ‘poker gambling’.”
Mitt Romney is the GOP Presidential candidate and he has stated in the past that he is strongly opposed to online gambling because he feels it has a social cost and leads to addictive habits. The GOP website lists the full Platform, so those interested can read the full scope of the plank which involves online gambling.
