In the latest home poker game robbery, police in Salt Lake City, Utah, are investigating the armed robbery of yet another home high-stakes poker game.
According to local reports, a group of about a half-dozen friends explained to the police they were waiting to leave for a trip to Las Vegas and had gathered the home for a few hands of poker prior to the trip, at about 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The victims informed the police that during the game, three armed men wearing Halloween-type skeleton costumes invaded the home through a back door and demanded money. One thief had a gun, the other two had knives and they stole nearly $20,000 in cash. No one was injured in the robbery.
As the popularity of televised tournament poker, poker television shows and online poker continue to increase, so does the popularity of home poker game, which has lead to a drastic increase in home poker robberies, by thieves looking to make an easy money off of unprotected poker players with money on the table.
In two other recent robberies, one in Indianapolis, In, and the other in Asburn, Va, guns were also used to rob home players. In the Indiana case, one of the players got into a scuffle with a thief, and was wounded for his trouble.
This is rapidly becoming a nation wide issue, with attention to home games on the rise, the poker playing public is facing limited alternatives. Online playing is banned in most states, and by federal law, making a more secure option out of the question.
