The 2008 Irish Poker Championship has come drawn to an end as an Irishman that brought home the title.
Jude Ainsworth a 28 year old of Claregalway outlasted the field and earned the first place prize of €180,000 and the crystal trophy Irish Poker Championship Trophy.
Though this championship was just a little shy of the 400 that was
originally anticipated, Ainsworth still had to fight his way through 297 poker players. The Irish Poker Championship originally hoped the winner would be able to claim a $1 million prize but that doesn’t matter to Jude or the rest of the poker community who considered this event an overwhelming success.
“It doesn’t get much better than this! To say that we are going to sink a few pints is an understatement! I couldn’t ask for much more than this, I’ve had great support all the way through. I was planning taking a break after my PhD at GNUIG in Galway. This makes everything a lot easier,†said Ainsworth excitedly after the win.
Defeating this field was no easy feat. Players included Ciaran O’Leary, Marcel Luske, Mike Sexton, Robert Williamson III and finishing runner up U.K. circuit regular Michael McCool.
According to Mike Sexton, “When you play poker in Ireland it is not only about playing poker. There is a camaraderie here you don’t find at all poker tournaments.”
The Irish Championship final table consisted of:
- Jude Ainsworth
- Bernard Brady
- Trevor Dineen
- Glen McCabe
- Michael McCool
- Keith McFadden
- Michael Moran
- Tommy Watson
