Jason Mercier’s t-shirt (photo credit: WSOP.com) at the final table of the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. Championship summed up not just his week at the Rio, but his entire tournament poker career thus far:
“LEGEND STATUS.”
Just minutes ago, Mercier won his 2nd gold bracelet of the week at the World Series of Poker, taking down James Obst heads up for the $10K H.O.R.S.E. title and further cemented his status as one of the all-time greats in not just the tournament world, but at the WSOP as a whole.
The Final Hand
Jason pounded his opponents into submission all evening, eventually giving him a near insurmountable chip stack of $8M+ to the mere $300K of Obst once heads-up play started to wind down.
On the final hand, Mercier turned over a paltry 5 3 offsuit and put in Obst all-in for his tournament life. Obst flipped up Q J and wasn’t in a bad spot to double up in the Limit Holdem portion of the tournament.
However, a flop of 10 4 2 gave Mercier an open-ended straight draw – along with a multitude of other outs to at least give him the lead with the 4th and 5th street coming up. The turn sealed James Obst’s fate as an Ace hit the felt, giving Mercier a wheel and WSOP glory yet again.
This is Mercier’s 5th WSOP bracelet, putting him in elite company with the likes of John Juanda and the late Stu Ungar as 5-time bracelet winners.
“Bracelet Bet” Glory for Mercier
He takes home a little over $422,000 for his win, but the headlines that will flood the media outlets this weekend will most likely revolve around the countless hundreds of thousands (maybe a million?) Mercier will be collecting in side bets on his WSOP action.
It was already confirmed that fellow poker pro Vanessa Selbst bought out of a wager that could’ve potentially costed her $1.8 million if Mercier hit for 3 WSOP bracelets this year, while GPI Leader Fedor Holz will be shelling out even MORE money to Mercier after already losing $200K on Mercier’s 1st bracelet score earlier in the week.
It is not that difficult to speculate that the total haul in “bracelet bet” wins for Mercier has probably exceeded $1 million alone (remember, we’re only a few weeks into the WSOP season) – and with around $700k in WSOP earnings for the 2 titles he’s already won this week at the Rio, I’m sure Jason won’t be hurting in the cash department for the rest of the summer.
