It seems as though another politician has chosen to push their own views onto the citizens they represent. This time, according to a report by Casino Gambling Web, and Gambling Compliance, Martha Coakley, the Attorney General of Massachusetts, and a woman known for her opposition to gambling told members of the Poker Players Alliance that she will be rejecting their attempt to let the voters decide when it comes to Online Poker, and gambling in general. Coakley will be not be allowing the online poker initiative on the ballot in November.
The PPA intended to have voters to voice their wishes, in a democratic fashion and decide whether or not Massachusetts should tax and regulate online poker. The attorney general however, having no faith her constituents and little respect for the legal process, called the proposed tax law requirements “Highly Ambiguous”.
Here’s what could have happened, or what could have at least been voted down by the people of Massachusetts had they been given the opportunity to make the choice. Massachusetts state laws would have been amended making online poker LEGAL in the state, though there would have been some conditions.. such as taxation, whereas the state of Massachusetts would profit, rather than just have it’s citizens play oversees at websites such as PokerStars.
The current law in Massachusetts does not specifically say that online poker is against the law, or illegal in anyway.
Coakley said that the PPA petition was not valid, as it was ‘not in the correct form’. She pointed out words used within the initiative, such as register and license.
