On Friday, the state of Massachusetts became the third in the US to create regulations for the popular daily fantasy sports industry. Indiana and Virginia are the only other two states who have such regulations in place.
The regulations put in place by the state are no surprise as Attorney General of Massachusetts Maura Healey announced some time ago the creation of DFS regulation was in the works. The purpose of regulation for DFS gaming is to help protect the consumers of Massachusetts who take part in the contests for prizes from unfair and deceptive acts that can arise during the process of gaming.
According to the regulations, players have to be 21 years of age or older to be able to participate. Contests cannot be held on high school sports as well as collegiate games. DFS operators in the state must adopt the new rules by the 1st of July, with DraftKings already announcing they will be complying with the new regulations of the state.
DraftKings released a statement on the new regulations, stating that the company appreciates the leadership of the Massachusetts AG and her office, along with their willingness to have a dialogue about the important issues of the daily fantasy sports industry. DraftKings further stated that the regulations are tough, but the brand will be complying. The company will continue to work with policymakers around the United States to make sure that DFS contests are fun and fair for the many individuals who participate.
While DraftKings decided to be in compliance with the new regulations, FanDuel has stated they have concerns over the new rules. FanDuel announced a common goal with the state of Massachusetts in regards to protecting consumers but feel the new rules will restrict the ability to introduce new pro-consumer innovations.
The company announced that they will work diligently to ensure they are in full compliance and hope to see the regulations evolving over time.
