While all eyes have been on Pennsylvania to become the next state to legalize and regulate online gambling in the United States, and now, Massachusetts has started to show interest, following the lead of Pennsylvania. Just two weeks ago, Maura Healey, the Attorney General for Massachusetts, revealed a proposal for regulations of daily fantasy sports. Since Healey’s revelation, the state has become a candidate for a possible expansion into online gambling.
Healey indicated that daily fantasy sports are not violating the law of Massachusetts, which could mean that the door has opened for online poker to arrive in the state. After the decision by Healey; Bruce Tarr, the Senate Minority Leader, has shown support for online gaming, announcing he would like to see the state Gaming Commission approve licensing to casinos that already operate within the state to offer wagering options online.
Consider the fact that the AG has basically green-lighted daily fantasy sports, combined with the opening of Plainridge Park Casino and the construction of the MGM Springfield and Wynn Everett casinos. All of this could culminate in considerations for online poker in the state. It won’t be easy, but all things considered, could open the doorway to make walking through with online poker legislation a little easier.
It should be pointed out that DFS is considered a legal business in the state and poker has been prohibited in Massachusetts for many years. It is believed that because online poker is more complex, the industry would need stronger regulations than DFS requires. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission would be the group in which regulation and licensing would be provided.
Overall, it seems that the discussion of DFS has now opened up the discussion of online poker as well. It will be interesting to keep watch as the state of Massachusetts becomes one of several states interested in online gaming as 2015 comes to a close and a New Year begins.
