Just yesterday, it was announced that MGM Resorts International was given a preliminary approval to offer online poker for real money as an operator. The company is now one step closer to having the ability to offer legalized intrastate online poker for the state of Nevada.
MGM Resorts International is expected to offer free play online poker beginning in 2013, the early portion, and they will be using the bwin.party poker platform as part of their offering. Later this month, the company will be seeking the final approval o their license which must be granted by the Nevada Gaming Commission.
Jim Murren, the CEO of MGM, spoke with Reuters earlier this week on the subject, and stated: “We are encouraged to know that states are talking to one another. They are crafting their own legislation and legal frameworks but are talking with other states in anticipation of compacting with multiple states. We feel strongly that if it is in fact state by state, the states themselves need to compact with one another to create a more viable business model. Any one state going on its own presents an economic challenge, particularly in a small state like Nevada.”
Just a little over a year ago, MGM decided to partner with bwin.party as well as Boyd Gaming as they were anticipating the legalization of gambling. The partnership gives bwin.party 65% of the company since they provide and maintain the software for both MGM and Boyd Gaming. MGM receives 25% of the ownership and Boyd holds 10%.
Two other companies were also recommended for licenses by the Gaming Control Board; Z4Poker LLC as well as Cams LLC of Las Vegas and Los Angeles respectively. On November 15th, the Nevada State Gaming Control Board Gaming Commission will be considering the applications for approval.
