Event #21 of the 2012 World Series of Poker was a tournament of firsts. The $1,000 No Limit Hold’em tournament had 2,799 players competing and Michael Gathy was the player who outlasted them all. The win was a first for Gathy and he earned his first WSOP cash out and his first WSOP bracelet!
With such a large field of players, twenty three year old Gathy would have to be on top of his game to earn his first WSOP win. After holding strong and outlasting the field, Gathy had to face Jamie Armstrong in heads up play before he would earn the first place finish.
When the final day of the event began, seventeen players would return vying for the gold bracelet. After just two levels of play the top ten would remain and it would take just a few hours before heads up play would begin.
Heads up play would last two levels and would be quite exciting. The chip lead would go back and forth between the two players and neither would take a strong hold over the other. However end the end Gathy would earn the lead and the last hand would take place during level 31.
Once heads up play reached level 31, the blinds would sit at 60,000/120,000 with a 15,000 ante. The last hand would see Armstrong shove a four bet and Gathy would call. Armstrong turned over pocket nines while Gathy turned over pocket tens. The board would fall 8-K-5-A-7 and the higher pair would win the hand and give Gathy his first WSOP win.
