It was less than five months ago that Daniel Negreanu made a significant step in his career by signing to become an ambassador for GGPoker. At that point, the poker world was thriving, and live events were taking place all over the world. Who would have thought that it would all slow down to a standstill only a couple of months after that? The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll, and the poker world was not spared.
After the initial warnings about the coronavirus, Negreanu decided to do all he could to protect himself and the world around him. He and his wife voluntarily self-isolated even before the virus started ravaging through the US.
According to him, his life didn’t change that much with the self-quarantine imposed, as he and his wife were both “homebodies.” However, he regretted not being able to go to hockey games, being a big fan of this sport.
The Vegas Golden Knights fan had to face the fact that hockey was pretty much affected by the virus, and games had to be canceled or postponed — just like live poker.
His Thoughts on the 2020 World Series of Poker
Spring has come to the US, and for poker players, that means that there’s growing excitement about the summer and one of the most important poker festival in the world — The World Series of Poker.
However, that seems to be going in a different direction right now, as many players are not positive whether it will take place at all. The officials of the WSOP are still not making any bold claims about possible cancellation or postponement.
Negreanu is onboard the cancellation train, firmly believing that the WSOP officials will most definitely cancel or postpone the festival. He stated that he didn’t see a WSOP happening in 2020. However, he added that he saw it could happen in the fall but that he wouldn’t have been surprised if it all blew over.
According to him, there wasn’t much one can do to stop the virus from spreading during the live poker tournaments.
If the officials decide to postpone or cancel the WSOP, it wouldn’t be the only poker tournament. In fact, the majority of land-based competitions are either being postponed or canceled.
However, some of them found out a suitable alternative — to offer the players to play poker online. That’s why many online poker platforms are now adjusting their offer of poker games, expecting a bigger influx of online poker players in the days to come.
Negreanu is pretty vocal when it comes to playing online poker, advising everyone to play it that way instead of gathering in real life. He stated that it was a lot “more comfortable and convenient.” And he is right — one doesn’t get a chance to play poker while laying on the couch and drinking beer.
